I’m Ray, the founder of The Function Lab.
My interest in how the body works didn’t start in a textbook. It started with a snowboard accident that injured my back, followed by a neck injury from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and a few stubborn shoulder issues picked up along the way through repetitive work. Like many people, I wanted to understand why things hurt, what would actually help, and how to get back to moving with confidence rather than caution.
That curiosity grew into a genuine love for this work. Over time, it also came with a growing frustration. After more than a decade in practice, I’ve seen too many people feel rushed, confused, or stuck in care plans they don’t fully understand. I don’t believe that’s how healthcare should feel.
At The Function Lab, I take a different approach. I spend time listening, explaining things clearly, and working with you to understand what’s going on and what feels right moving forward. There are no one-size-fits-all plans, no pressure to commit to endless appointments, and no quick fixes promised. Just considered, individual care shaped around your goals and your life.
Outside the clinic, I’ve spent years running, training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and playing guitar, and I’ve recently started learning the keyboard, slowly and with realistic expectations. These days, though, most of my free time is happily dominated by my two-year-old, Australian Shepherd. When time allows, I’ll occasionally squeeze in a video game, though that’s becoming something of a rare luxury.
At the heart of my work is a simple belief. People have an incredible ability to adapt and change when they’re given the time, understanding, and opportunity to do so. My role is to support that process, not rush it.
